Chendol is a Nyonya shaved ice dessert which is an excellent treat on hot, humid days. While it may strike the first time traveler to Penang as bowl of green worms, this dessert is much more pleasing to the tastebuds than first impressions! Chendol refers to the translucent jade green gelatinous noodle that is the key ingredient to this dessert. It is made from green pea flour and the aromatic juice of pandanus leaves. Chendol is topped with a generous shaving of ice and crowned with a liberal dose of coconut milk and gula Melaka (or palm sugar) which gives the milky brown colour to the dessert.

The Teochew version of the Chendol dessert will have large kidney beans which lends a savoury counterbalance to the sweetness of the syrup. Mix well before eating, and your tastebuds will be rewarded with the creamy taste of the coconut milk, the sweetness of palm sugar, and the aromatic flavor of pandan within the Chendol noodles. There is nothing better than Chendol to cool oneself after a hot day walking around the tourist sites or shopping. Expect to pay around RM1.50 for a bowl of Chendol.
