Yeng Keng a Heritage Boutique Hotel

I had the good fortune to be invited for a sneak peek at the recently opened Yeng Keng Hotel at 362 Chulia Street in the heart of George Town, Penang. The building, which dates to the 1800s, has recently been restored and transformed into a beautiful 20 room boutique hotel.

The owner had shared that the original building is of Indian-Muslim heritage. The building subsequently changed hands to a Chinese, who then added the grand frontage with Chinese influences. This building certainly has a 1Malaysia history to it!

The hotel has modern touches like its glass side facade and glass awnings. Nevertheless, the owner has kept to the original yellow ochre limestone wash for the walls and artistic detailing on the front and back archways, which were restored by artisans brought in from China.

The hotel opened its doors in April this year and is now having attractive promotional rates. It even has a “Ta Pau” or takeaway service to bring up your favorite hawker delights from nearby. Penang Street Food approved!!

Check out Yeng Keng Hotel’s lovely interior in these photos.
